John 14:2 – In my Father's house are many mansions.
A happy madhouse. That about describes the scene at any airport, train or bus station just before Christmas. A crush of people all travelling for the holidays. Many will be going "home" or making a home, wherever they're going.
That seems to be a part of Christmas. It can also be a point of hurt, for people who have no "home" to go to. "Home" may not have been a safe or happy place. It may be gone.
But you can't live without a home, regardless of the fact that you may have a place to sleep. We are all God's children and part of God's family. There is only one thing to do: if you don't have a home, you have to make one. This may take courage to move on from a painful situation, but take it from me, once a home is built, it's better inside. Look toward the Christmas hope, and move toward it. If you don't think you've got much to start with, don't worry. It's all part of the season.
The God we worship left His home in heaven and decided to make a home here on earth. Rather than borrow some palace or temple, He had to use a manger for a temporary home, because — you know — "there was no room in the inn."
We have a home on this planet, but Jesus said that our true, lasting home was with Him in heaven. He was born, lived, died and rose again, so we can truly make our home there. Hope, in this season is more than a mass of brightly coloured packages. It is a living hope in Jesus Christ, whose coming at Christmas we celebrate.
If you can, look around this season. Someone close by you might be elderly, infirm or alone this year. Invite them in, and look, there's another Christmas angel. For you might entertain an angel — or be one yourself.
Prayer: Lord, this season can be difficult and emotional for some. Grant us your grace, peace and hope. Let us truly remember that we are all part of Your family, and one day will make our home with You. Amen.
