Turn Your Radio On

Psalm 87:7 – As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

Radio has always played a huge part in my life. When I was little, it was our only contact with the "outside" world, for we had no telephones or televisions. I loved to have that radio playing at my bedside. Even now, it is usually on in our home, and so it was last week that I heard a "promo" for a program airing on a Vancouver radio station from six to seven a.m. on Sunday morning. The program was to feature a gospel jazz band, the featured artist having the same name as a gentleman who used to have a jazz program on our local radio station, several years back.

The time was no problem. The word "jazz", however, was. While I love, or at least tolerate most forms of music, jazz usually drives me to distraction. But my interest was piqued, however, to see if this could be the same musician. I was also a little curious as to the term "Gospel Jazz" and so I tuned in.

To my sheer delight, I was treated to new renditions of good old favourites, with explanations of their roots and beginnings. It was the same musician, and one of the selections was "Turn Your Radio On". It was gospel, it was jazz, and I actually like it, loved it, wanted to hear more of it. The hour ended far too soon.

Our lives are so enriched when we are open to explore things we think we don't want to do. Mine certainly was that Sunday morning.

Prayer: We thank you Lord, for giving us the choice to open our hearts and our minds, to cast away our negative views and thoughts, and to listen before we judge. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord we pray. Amen.
