A Renewed Encounter

Revelation 2:4-5 – But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you, and will remove your lampstand out of its place — unless you repent. (NASB)

Do you remember that special day when you first asked Jesus into your heart?

I remember that special day very well and the events and situations that came with it. I remember writing, "Jesus saves!" and "Jesus loves you!" on the rocks on the public beach without fear and with courage. I remember carrying my Bible everywhere and anticipating an opportunity to speak to others about Jesus and how He died and rose again for us. But my exuberant expressions of writing on rocks has waned over the years.

A few months ago, I was invited to attend a Bible study on 2 Peter at our church. Reluctantly, I attended; my busy schedule allowed it. At the meeting, our teacher, Heather, said that none of us were present by accident and that God has a special purpose for each one of us. She said that we needed to be prepared to learn new things and unlearn old things, and that in the learning, we would never listen to a sermon the same way, we would never read scripture the same way — that we would open ourselves to a whole new intimate relationship with the Lord and be amazed, and that this study would be life-changing. I decided that I would stay, but was still a bit skeptical.

The Bible study, indeed, was a life-changer! I experienced a renewed encounter with Jesus, which led me to study God's word. It brought to the surface what was hidden deep down inside, writing devotionals.

Today, I am writing again. Not on rocks on the beach, but on the Internet — sharing the message of salvation with the public again. A tiny spark turned into a fire!

Prayer: Father, forgive us when we leave our "first love". Bring us back to You, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
