What Is Important

Luke 12:33-34 – Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV)

Since we were married, we have moved twice. The first time, I held onto the things that seemed precious to me, but since then life has changed. When we moved the second time, our children were grown, married, with children of their own, and our parents had all passed away. We had chosen a new home that suited our lifestyle, and we prepared to move. But more importantly, life had taken on new meaning: the things of this life had grown dim in comparison to life in Christ.

So, the second time we moved, I might have seemed ruthless in the way I threw out or gave away those things I had previously thought so wonderful. I did keep some that had sentimental value, those I enjoyed the most, but the rest I let go. And I have never missed them — the things that I had thought were so important in my life!

Today I cling to life in Christ and the ones I love in Christ.

Oh, don't get me wrong! I still like to have things that God has entrusted to me, but if I were to lose them tomorrow, I feel I could manage, with trust and love in God as my provider. How life in Christ changes our values! The things we once treasured become of no value and the riches of God become the true value. Once we realize this, it becomes easier to part with things.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we grow closer in our relationship with You, help us to let go of the things in our lives, and to seek the precious gifts that You have given to us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
