God Is Only A Prayer Away

Ephesians 6:18 – And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (NIV)

When I turned on the so-called hot water tap, it seemed ages until the hot water came forth. Because of the subtropical climate and the high water table so close to the ocean, the plumbing runs above the ceiling. The hot water tank is at the far end of the house, so, if the overnight temperature is cool, all the water has to be drawn off before the hot water comes through. This takes time.

With patience, I wait and watch the wasteful misuse of water drawn through the pipe, until all the cool water is drained off, and the warm water turns hot.

While waiting, I was thinking about our relationship with God. Sometimes we feel that our spiritual water is cold and God seems so far away. What a waste, waiting passively for our experience of God to warm up! We should rearrange our spiritual plumbing, our prayer life, and move closer to the source, which is in Jesus Christ our Lord. God is only a prayer away.

Prayer: God of light, God of love, our one true source of life, we come praying for each other. Not waiting or wasting our time on foolish things, we come, drawing closer to you through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, in whose name we pray. Amen.
