Gifts Of The Spirit

Romans 12:2 – Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and prove what God's will is — His good, pleasing and perfect will. (NIV)

I had always felt inferior as a teacher, because I did not have a teaching degree, as many of the church's teachers did. One day I read today's scripture. It did not say, "Renew your mind by getting a teaching degree." The word "transform" comes from a Greek word meaning "metamorphosis". This is a process like the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. Just as the laws of nature help a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, the Spirit of Christ can enable us to renew our minds in such a way that we can discern the will of God. The Spirit does not give us a dictionary and an encyclopaedia with all the facts, but a spirit of faith, which renews us from within.

As Christians, we belong to a community of faith, which possesses a diversity of gifts. Just as the human body has different functions, so does the body of Christ. These gifts come from Christ and are to be used for His service.

If we, as Christians, let the Spirit lead us, are we not as spiritually qualified as the college graduate? Should we withhold the gift the Spirit has given us because we do not meet the standards of the world? I don't believe that Christ would say so.

Romans 12:7 – If it is serving, let him serve, if it is teaching, let him teach. (NIV)

Prayer: Holy Spirit, grant us the faith to believe that our gifts of teaching come from you. May our minds be opened to your leading, and may we use our gifts for your glory. Amen.
