Christmas Wreaths

Luke 2:10 – Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David's town your Savior was born — Christ the Lord! (GNB)

When I was a young girl, I went shopping with my grandfather. It is the only time I can remember going on a shopping trip with him. I saw a lovely Christmas wreath, and my grandfather, knowing that it would bring joy to me, purchased the wreath. He hung it on the front door of the apartment where he and my grandmother lived.

Later, when I was the mother of two small children, the first Christmas decoration I purchased for our home was a simple green wreath with an oversized red bow. I proudly hung it in the living room window. I left it up until the end of January that year. The next year, I purchased two other green wreaths, and the children each claimed one. They decorated the wreaths with various treasures. The next year, we made more wreaths, and they also brought more joy. Although the children are teenagers, we still hang those wreaths at the beginning of Advent. We put them up first thing, and take them down last of all.

Christmas wreaths and other decorations bring joy for a short time each year, but the one they honour, Jesus Christ, brings lasting, year-round joy. When we are in a right relationship with God through Christ, then we are free to live joyful and productive lives in his service, because we are secure in knowing that we have eternal life. May each of us discover the true joy of knowing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.

Prayer: God of all joy, we come to you with thanksgiving in our hearts at Christmastime. May the true joy that comes from knowing Jesus fill our hearts and minds today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
