Spring Cleaning

Hebrews 10:22 – Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. (NIV)

Psalm 51:10 – Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (NIV)

Spring has been long-awaited in this area. According to the people who have lived in Cape Breton for years, this past winter has been one of the coldest and longest in their memory. But, in late March, things began to change, the snowbanks began to melt, and the bitter weather eased.

Below my home, I noticed that the eagles had come back to their nests, and I could hear them calling to one another, as they sat in the tree at the edge of the lake, and watched for their morning breakfast. While on a walk, I watched deer nibbling on tiny shoots of grass, and I heard the 'whish and flutter' made by the swishing of their white tails, as they warned one another of approaching danger, and bounded back into the woods. All around me, I saw signs of spring — treats from God's creation. However, the stronger sunlight, which was dancing on my windows, was also showing up the winter's dirt, so I had to start my spring cleaning.

As I put away the mittens, and cleaned away the signs of winter, I was reminded of the symbolism of spring. It is a time of renewal, a time of new growth, and a time of cleansing. But more importantly, this is a wonderful time to allow God to create in us a pure heart, and to renew and cleanse us in our spiritual lives.

Prayer: May we, like the Psalmist, come to You, and allow You to create in us a pure heart, O God. Help us to allow You to renew a steadfast spirit within our lives. Amen.
