Perfection Not Required

Titus 3:4-7 – But when God, our kind and loving Saviour God, stepped in, he saved us from all that. It was all his doing; we had nothing to do with it. He gave us a good bath, and we came out of it new people, washed inside and out by the Holy Spirit. Our Saviour Jesus poured out new life so generously. God's gift has restored our relationship with him and given us back our lives. And there's more life to come — an eternity of life! (MSG)

I gave the page a quick scan to make sure there were no mistakes. Wow! Here was a misspelled word the spellchecker had overlooked! I quickly corrected it by deleting the incorrect letter of the alphabet and inserting the correct one. A second check showed the article to be perfect with its spelling, punctuation, and typing. I could now submit it with the knowledge that it was acceptable.

I recalled the days when articles were typed on manual typewriters, using carbon paper to make a second copy. If one made a mistake in typing or spelling, the entire page had to be done over. A few typographical errors could reduce production and make the day chaotic. Typists strived for perfection, but sometimes errors occurred just the same. How blessed we are today to have the computer that allows us to correct the mistakes when we make them, or, if found later, to correct just the mistake.

What if Jesus had required perfection of us before we could enter His kingdom? Christ reached out to us while we were yet sinners. He reached out to rescue the imperfect, and to heal the broken-hearted. He did not say, "Type this paper without a mistake and you can belong to my group." He paid the ultimate price to purchase us — mistakes, misspellings, and all.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for Your great love. Thank You for not requiring us to be perfect before You rescue us. Amen.
