Matthew 6:19-20 – Don't store up treasures on earth! Moths and rust can destroy them, and thieves can break in and steal them. Instead, store up your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy them, and thieves cannot break in and steal them. (CEV)
Many grandmothers, like me, without a doubt, have a drawer in their dresser where they have stored up treasures over the years to give to the grandchildren when they are around. Like mine, they probably were quick to catch on about the treasures hiding there for their discovery. My grandchildren would always say, "Grandma, let's go look for treasures." Some days they would find a shell from the seashore, a special coloured rock, a key chain, or even some cast-off piece of costume jewellery, which would delight them.
I was blessed with six beautiful grandchildren; the four oldest are grown now. On reflection, I look back and think of the fun times we had discovering these treasures. Also, on reflection, I long to turn back the clock so I could instruct them on the greater treasures to be found in learning about Jesus. It is nice to store away little gifts to delight the youngsters, but the gifts of the treasures of God should never be hidden. The children must know that God loves them too, and has provided a place for them in eternity. Oh, such a treasure is this!
Colossians 2:2-3 – That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (NKJV)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive those of us who have missed the golden opportunities of spreading Your love to our children and grandchildren. Lay it on our hearts to instruct the little ones in Your ways, for by so doing it will help them, as they reach their teen years, to turn away from the things of the evil one and discover Your treasures on a deeper level. Amen.
