The Royal Family

Sunday, May 30, 2004

When I was preparing a devotional to share with the local Christian school, I went to my favourite storybook, the book of Daniel. Here we learn how a young man was born into a noble family yet taken into captivity and forced to serve a king.

Daniel 1:3 – Then the King ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility. (NIV)

From a spiritual point of view, we, too, have been taken into captivity. Adam's sin has separated us from our royal family, the family of God. However, in Corinthians, we read how God shows us the way to be reunited with Him, and return as members in good standing to His royal family.

2 Corinthians 6:17-18 – Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. (NIV)

When we ask God for forgiveness for our sins, He receives us. He becomes our Father, and we become His sons and daughters. Instead of living our lives in spiritual captivity, we are qualified to become the children of the King of kings.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, sometimes it is beyond our comprehension just how much You love us. You love us enough to take us out of Satan's captivity, and make us Your sons and daughters. Thank You for this love beyond all measure. Amen.
