God's Amazing Star Field

Friday, June 17, 2005

1 Corinthians 15:40-41 – There are celestial bodies and there are terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. (RSV)

Having been raised on Long Island in the suburbs of New York City, I was aware that the stars were hidden from full view. Even on the blackest of nights, the lights from the city obscured our view. Thus I grew up never knowing just how vast is the star field in which we live. I could not remember ever seeing a shooting star or realizing that the heavens are huge. Not until my husband, George, and I went camping one year in north-western Pennsylvania did I discover that velvet vastness.

The first night of camping in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, we lay out on a blanket under the stars just to take it all in. We were awed by it. As we lay there side by side, my husband began to point out the constellations and clusters which for centuries have borne names like Big Dipper and Little Dipper. As he pointed and exclaimed over the myriad depth of the star field, a shooting star streaked across the sky! I'll never forget the feeling of awe we felt at that shared experience. As I grasped his hand, the words of the psalmist came to mind.

Psalm 8:3-4 – When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast established; what is man that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou dost care for him? (RSV)

What continues to be so utterly amazing to me is that God is mindful of us. He knows His creation and each one of us intimately. Just think of it! The God who made the vast star field cares about you and me! Isn't that simply amazing? God cared so much for us that He came in Christ Jesus to rescue us from the disasters of our own making. And while I'll never understand everything that happens on this planet earth, I do trust that the One who made the heavenly bodies will recreate this terrestrial body into one like Christ's on the day when the Lord returns to take us home.

Prayer: Loving God, as we stand in awe of the stars and the work of Your hands in creation, we also are awed by Your great love for us through Christ Jesus. Enable us today to trust that You will bring us to Yourself as we look to You. Amen.
