My Match Collection

Psalm 18:28 – For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. (KJV)

Psalm 43:3 – O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. (KJV)

Ephesians 5:8-9 – For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth.) (KJV)

Matthew 5:16 – Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (KJV)

Years ago, when smoking was prevalent, restaurants usually had a container of free matches at the checkout till for a package or two to be given to or taken by their customers. It was good advertising. Every time you lit a match, their name would of course be prevalent.

It was also quite common for people to take a pack of matches as a souvenir, especially when they were on holidays as a memento of where they'd been. Sounds silly now, but lots of folks did it, including me.

When going through things awhile back, I took all the matches and put them in a drawer to be used for lighting candles.

Recently, my daughter gave me a beautiful rock salt candle holder that looks somewhat cold and hard when there isn't a lit candle inside — but put in a tea light, and the light warms the rock salt, bringing out a beautiful orange glow.

My match collection from so long ago helps me light my candles, and yes, while I need to replenish my candles, and eventually my matches, that which I had from long ago has helped "ignite my light".

Our spiritual life is something like my match collection.

The teachings we "picked up" so long ago are similar to my match collection. While we may wander away from the spiritual side of our life because we're too busy with other things, those songs we used to sing at camp and the lessons and Scriptures we learned at Sunday School, church, Vacation Bible School and Bible study groups are still with us, and serve to "ignite" our spiritual life when we once again choose to pursue His Word and His works.

Prayer: Lord, while we may stray away from You at times; we give thanks for the lessons we learned in our youth. As we return, may we remember to leave little lessons to be "picked up" by others whenever the opportunity presents itself. Through You we pray. Amen.
