Pretty Or Practical

Psalm 112:1 – Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands. (NIV)

Years of sewing left me with a wealth of scraps. Quilting sounded like a good idea, and the first one completed went to one of my children. He has been going through a challenging time lately; thus I called it his comfort blanket. Last night when talking to him on the phone, I asked how the quilt was holding up, "Oh, I don't use it," he answered. "It's a work of art. I just look at it and show it to everyone who visits. It makes me feel good just to see it and know it was made with love."

His comment caused me to think about the way we use God's Word. Do we buy a beautiful edition, bound in embossed leather with gold edges and printed on onion-skin pages, yet leave it to sit unopened, only admired from the outside? God's Word was meant to be read and applied — another gift of love from Him.

My son may use the quilt as a cover later. Will we wait until later to read God's letters? His gift is for now, and tells us of His love — salvation. This is the gift that never wears out or fades, unlike the quilt.

Prayer: Precious Lord, we need to open Your Book of inspiration and love. How grateful we are for the freedom to do this. Give us insight in all that we do see there, and the courage to follow the instructions. In Jesus' name we ask. Amen.
