World Filled With Sadness

Listen to this devotional:

John 14 2-3 – In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (NIV)

I recall an incident that took place in our high school. A student in one of my classes became very upset with the teacher when he asked the student to leave the classroom and proceed to the office on account of not having completed his homework. The student became very angry, and instead of leaving, he lunged at the teacher and began to choke him. It took three students to remove the student from the teacher. I will never forget that day and how quickly it all happened.

In recent days and weeks, it seems that each time I turn on the television or see the headlines, the news is filled with reports of shootings taking place in our schools. It seems that all our children, from the very young to the young adult, in big cities and in small rural areas, are at risk.

The Bible talks clearly in the book of Revelation about the last days, and whether we think we are in this time or not, it is evident that death and violence now target our children. As believers, we will be and are being asked to explain or justify our God to the unbelievers. People are watching and listening to us very closely in these times. For me, it comes back to the hope that lives within me:

1 Peter 3:15 – But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we come to You with our prayers and our sorrows in times of loss. We know that You are also grieving. Help us to know Your heart and to feel Your grief. Give us a heart that weeps in sorrow with You for a lost world. Show us how to reach out in love and prayers. Amen.
