Paid In Full

John 19:30 – When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (NIV)

John 3:16-17 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (KJV)

"Paid in full!" the bank clerk said with a smile, as he stamped the words in red on my record. It was a great moment in my life. For many years, my husband and I had faithfully sent a cheque to the bank once a month as a payment on our home. Today was the last one. Instead of mailing it, as I had done for the past twenty years, I drove the thirty miles to the bank. That day, it was paid in full — no more house payments to make. We owned our home. A myriad of things flashed through my mind for which we could use the money.

Leaving the bank that day, I thought of another account that had been "paid in full" for me. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He paid for my salvation. When I accepted Him as my Saviour, my name was among those He wrote in the Book of Life. That did not mean that I was perfect or did not deserve to be punished for my sins. It meant that Jesus had taken my place on the cross — elected to die for my sins — so that I might be forgiven and spend eternity with Him.

Tears rolled down my face as I thought of the sacrifice Jesus had made for me. He had given His life in the most horrible and painful way, so that I and others who believed on Him and accepted His free gift might have life and have it abundantly.

Yes, God's grace is sufficient — always.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son Jesus Christ. Precious Jesus, thank You for the sacrifices You made for us — how You suffered and died on the cross that we might have salvation. There's no way we can thank You enough. We must accept Your gift of free grace. Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit Who guides and directs and lets us enjoy the life that's been made possible for us through Your divine grace. Amen.
