Praising God

Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 147:1 – Shout praises to the Lord! Our God is kind, and it is right and good to sing praises to him. (CEV)

How easy it is to praise the Lord when everything in our life seems to be going great! We all know how difficult we human beings find it to praise rather than to grumble when things are going wrong. It is so hard to say "Praise God" when our loved ones are dying.

Because God understands our sorrows and the adversities that we face in this life, we should be able to praise Him during our trials as well. I know that being human, I find it very difficult to praise Him when I see a little child going hungry or any person being abused. Yet because God is always there for us to turn to in prayer and to listen to our needs, we still have a reason to praise Him. He heals the broken-hearted and sends the Comforter. Often we praise God only when we are feeling good and turn to Him with our requests in prayer only when the going gets tough. But our God is a God for the bad times as well as the good times. He is available to us through all the storms of life.

Psalm 147:3 – He renews our hopes and heals our bodies. (CEV)

There are many ways we can praise our Lord other than with words: with singing, playing musical instruments, ministering to others, and with Christ-like attitudes and actions. Likewise, there are many reasons for praising Him, such as for His greatness and His everlasting love. We can praise Him when a brand new baby is born or baptized, praise Him as the young bride walks down the aisle to her beloved, praise Him when we say adieu to a beloved parent or grandparent who has entered into eternal rest. Above all, let us praise Him for the great gift of His Son, Jesus.

The list is endless.

Psalm 147:7 – Celebrate and sing! Play your harps for the Lord our God. (CEV)

Prayer: Dear Father, help us to be a people who praise You not only in the good times of our life, but also throughout our trials and tribulations. May we realize that in praising You at all times and in all things, we aid in keeping the evil one away from us. Help us not to look on this praise as a duty, but rather a privilege beyond measure. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
