Two Legs

Amos 5:23-24 – Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps; but let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream. (NIV)

Months spent in a leg cast as a child taught me to identify with a quotation in Adult Bible Studies recently, that a Christian needs two healthy legs. During my confinement, I learned why God had given mankind two legs rather than one. There are many things one cannot do on one leg. In order to balance, the body needs two legs with feet firmly planted on the surface to obtain this desired state of being.

In our Christian life, we can identify these legs as spirit and flesh, or as mind and matter, or as faith and concrete action. Anyone who tries to be a Christian without balancing the two sides is as helpless as I was with one leg in a cast.

As Christians, we need to surrender our spirit to God in holy living while at the same time expressing our faith in concrete action. It is not enough to sing a beautiful song; we must be able to express the music of that song in our daily lives. It is not enough that we are cared for and comfortable in our surroundings; we need to see that those around us receive justice also.

Prayer: Lord, in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we ask for justice and righteousness for all. We know that it is not enough to be well fed and clothed and loved ourselves. We shouldn't be satisfied until the same justice is available for all Your children. Our bodies work better when we have two healthy legs. Your kingdom works better when it is balanced just as our bodies do. Use us to bring about that balance. Amen.
