A Better Deal

It seems that everything that is supposedly good for us goes up in price. The whole wheat bread I often found on sale for ninety-nine cents is now triple the price and never on sale. Yes, I am aware that here in Canada, flour has gone up in price, but the price of the bread went up before the price of the flour.

The same price increases seem to apply to all goods that are nutritious or marked, "Good for your cholesterol", "your heart", "your sugar", etc. They are all up in price. But how about this for a deal:

Isaiah 55:1-2 – Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. (NIV)

Though we can't control the prices in the food market, there is something of much greater value than anything we can pay money for. God gave us something worth much more in His Son, who came to die on the cross, so that our sins — past, present, and future — could be forgiven. And it is much better for our hearts when we have received this as a free gift.

What a price Jesus paid for us! What better deal could we get? What greater value could we have? There is none!

1 Peter 3:18 – For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit. (NIV)

Prayer: Most gracious God our Father, we praise You and thank You for the value You have provided for us in the price paid by Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
