Jesus Our Covenant

Listen to this devotional:

Isaiah 49:8 – And I will keep You and give You for a covenant of the people. (NASB)

Years ago, in the early days of my walk with Jesus, I attended my first retreat weekend with a group of women. The main theme was about each believer's choice to have, or not to have, a closer relationship with the Lord Jesus by choosing to enter into a covenant relationship with Him, as in a spiritual marriage relationship. As well as today's Scripture and others, we studied many verses from the Song of Solomon. The retreat ended with this question for each individual: How close a relationship with Jesus do we desire?

When I arrived home in the evening, my family was in church. I went into the garden, knelt beneath my favourite praying tree, and made my desires and vows known to my Lord Jesus to enter into this spiritual, covenant relationship with Him. I felt, rather than heard, His receptive response, though many Scriptures did flood my mind as I wept in His presence. Yes, Jesus my Lord, the Word Himself, was indeed speaking to me.

The following day, I bought a ring with two jewels representing love and faith. I've worn this covenant ring for almost thirty years, with such multi-blessings too numerous to mention. There has always been a great love for Scripture and daily meditations.

I've found, for the spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, and material areas of my life, that the best balance comes from the Lord and His Word. And I'm merely one of millions who feel this way.

As Christians, understanding our identity in Christ is absolutely essential to our success in living this Christian life, so that we can press forward to take hold of what Jesus took hold of for us. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself is the total essence — the heart, soul, and Spirit — of the new covenant. May we meditate today on what all believers in Christ truly possess through Him.

Colossians 2:9-10 – In [Jesus Christ] dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power. (KJV)

Jesus shares His power with us to support and strengthen us, to overcome our enemies. He is total love — and there is not even a little of the love in His heart that is not given to us. We are ever receivers of His perfect justice and His perfect mercy. He sees to it that everything promised to us in His covenant of grace comes to fulfillment.

When Jesus was on earth, God the Father's delight and pleasure was upon our perfect Jesus. He stood totally accepted by the Most High God. We have the same acceptance through Him. The same love that God set upon the perfect Christ throughout His stainless life is set upon us. God gave His Son "for a covenant of the people".

We, God's people, are perfectly justified and sanctified, and we are the covenanted ones, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for our identity in You, that we belong to You, and that You belong to us through the salvation covenant relationship. Thank You that You willingly share all that You are with us. Our hearts have perfect reason ever to worship You, to sing, dance, and rejoice at the very sound of Your altogether lovely name, Jesus our Christ, which gives such great joy that none can ever destroy. Amen and Amen.
