Darker Days

Listen to this devotional:

Jeremiah 17:7 – Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. (NIV)

Over the last few weeks, the days have been getting shorter more quickly. During the summer months, driving to work in the daylight was a blessing.

As I hopped into my van at four o'clock this morning, however, one of the first things I did was switch on the lights, then the heat.

As I drove along with my headlights piercing the darkness, I mused over the fact that life is much like day and night. Things can be going so well, and we find ourselves walking in the sunshine of good things happening. We bask in the warmth of success or good news. Yet sometimes with very little, if any warning, our days of light and warmth can turn to the chilling darkness of trouble and sorrow.

At such times, our wonderful God has not left us without both light and warmth. Through His Word, our darkness shall be illuminated by the assurance of His guiding presence and ultimate control.

Through the fellowship of friends in Christ, we receive the warmth and goodness of His infinite love amidst the chilling darkness.

Yes, in the northern hemisphere, the days are growing shorter. It is simply part of life. Yet as the darkness increases, how glad I am that I have a fairly trustworthy vehicle to provide me with light and warmth as I go my way.

Even more so, how absolutely wonderful is the truth that we have a completely trustworthy heavenly Father in whom we may all have total confidence as our earthly days of experience also change from light to dark, dark to light!

Prayer: Dearest heavenly Father, how wonderful it is to have You throughout the light and darkness of our lives! How marvellous that You and You alone are completely trustworthy of our confidence in any and every situation. We love You. We praise You. We rest, this day, in both the light of Your Word and the warmth of Your people. In Christ's name. Amen.
