Filling What Is Empty

Psalm 46:10 – Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. (NIV)

Having had a postcard sent to me a few years ago, I chose to keep it on my computer desk where it sits to remind me to be still and recognize that I am in the presence of God, in accordance with today's verse.

This postcard has a picture of a wooden dock that reaches out over the quiet waters of a lake. On the dock are placed four empty Algonquin chairs, two small empty tables, and some planters.

Though this card represents the stillness of a quiet place where we could be alone with God, it nevertheless gives me a feeling that these chairs need people in them, and the tables need to be filled with books or plates of fruit, to make the picture come alive.

I feel that the scene as it stands depicts a certain sense of loneliness.

Though we all need time to be still and know God, we also need to have companions with whom to share our time. It is especially important to be together when our souls need to reach out to the Father to give Him praise for everything we have; to Jesus to give Him thanks for saving us to eternal life; and to the Holy Spirit to ask for strength for today and for what lies ahead.

In other words, chairs weren't built to be empty, tables to stand alone, docks just to extend over water, or lakes just to be admired. God gave them all to us to be filled and to be used. We need each other, and together in fellowship with others, we will all be filled with His Spirit.

Isaiah 45:18 – For this is what the Lord says — he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited — he says: "I am the Lord, and there is no other." (NIV)

Prayer: We come together this day to praise You, Father; to thank You, Jesus, for the forgiveness of our sin; and to ask You, Holy Spirit, to fill us with strength for today and for tomorrow. Amen.
