He Understands

Listen to this devotional:

Romans 8:26 – In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings. (HCSB)

Matthew 12:25a – And Jesus knew their thoughts. (KJV)

Zephaniah 3:17 – For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty saviour. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. (NLT)

I have recently found an old electric typewriter that our children learned to type on in our home school years ago. Because it is electric, one just has to touch the keys lightly and it types the letter. But if a key is held down too long, it just keeps making the same letter over and over again.

A nine-year-old granddaughter was here one day, enthralled with this old typewriter. She spent a long time learning how to type with it. She wrote me a letter. Often, she had two or more letters the same, due to holding one key too long. Sometimes, she forgot to space so the words all run together. Other times, she didn't quite know how to spell the words so spelled them like they sound.

At first, reading this letter was hard. I really struggled to decipher what she was saying. There were places where it looks like gibberish — no real words are discernible. But I sounded out the difficult areas, and I could understand. I have read it many times, and rejoice in what she has written. This little granddaughter is important to me. It is important to me to read what she has written to me. I care. I love her. Our relationship is valuable.

There are times when we talk to God, our Father. Maybe due to painful circumstances or puzzling situations, we don't know how to pray. We come to our Father, telling Him we don't know what to say. To us, maybe it sounds like gibberish. Maybe we don't pronounce our words correctly. Maybe we are too broken, and we don't have the strength to utter a single word. Does He care about us? Of course. The words of the song "Does Jesus Care?" so touch me.

    Does Jesus care when my heart is pained,
    Too deeply for mirth and song,
    As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
    And the way grows weary and long?
    O yes, He cares; I know He cares,
    His heart is touched with my grief;
    When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
    I know my Saviour cares.

      – Frank Graeff

He hears our words, even though maybe all we are doing is groaning. He delights in us. We are important to Him. Our relationship with our Father is valuable to Him. He rejoices over us with joyful songs. How amazing!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are awesome! You know our thoughts, our heartaches, our burdens, our sinfulness — even though at times we are unable to express our feelings. You also know our joys, our victories, and our triumphs. God, You rejoice over us. Help us to really believe, deep in our hearts, that You care. We are important to You. You love us. We claim these truths as ours today. Amen.
