The Missing Link

Listen to this devotional:

For many years, scientists have been trying to establish the missing link in the so-called evolutionary process from ape to human form. Some have laid claim to finding the link, only to be proven wrong and even deceptive, such as extrapolating a human form from a few bones found in some dig.

Having worked in scientific research for twenty-odd years, I can attest to working with investigators who would go to the ends of the earth or twist data to prove a pet theory.

I find that in the church, there appears to be, at times, a missing link as well. Jesus said:

John 15:4 – Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. (NKJV)

When I ask believers if they do devotions involving Bible reading and prayer, many of them say, "Only on occasion." Therein lies the missing link — a personal relationship with God — due to a lack of contact with Him by reading His Word regularly and praying.

A further danger is that without a personal relationship with God firmly grounded in Scripture, both individuals and church bodies can invent beliefs based on little biblical evidence and operate on grounds that cannot be substantiated by Scripture.

I hound the guys in my men's group and anyone I can in this matter, because I don't want them to be weak in the faith by not linking (abiding) with the Lord every day. One of my daughters once told me that it wasn't all my preaching to her that impressed her in the faith, but seeing me every morning by the window reading my Bible.

Prayer: Almighty God and Father, forgive us if we have not linked up with You enough lately through reading Your Word and praying. Holy Spirit, hound us so that we will not be apathetic in this important part of our relationship with You. In Jesus' wonderful name, we pray. Amen.
