It's Getting Hot

Psalm 106:1,7 – Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. When our fathers were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea. (NIV)

My best friend enjoys scrapbooking. She passes many pleasant hours sorting and organizing thousands of photos taken over the spread of many years. Once they are arranged and cut to size, she formats them into scrapbooks for her grown children and grandchildren. Together as a family, the scrapbooks outline their history and also remind them of the many wonderful things that God has done for them over the years.

Remembering what God has done in our lives is important, especially when life starts to heat up. When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and freed them from slavery, there was great rejoicing over God's miracles on their behalf. All their years of praying and persevering had finally been recognized. They were free; a new life lay before them. And yet, as soon as life's experiences started heating up again, they tossed God's greatness to the wind and rebelled against Him. Like spoiled children, they failed to be patient and await God's timing in their lives. They failed to make the right choice, the choice to trust that amidst the heat of life, God was at work for their good.

Keeping a cool head when life is hot requires remembering and choosing. It requires choosing to trust that the Lord is good all the time and that His love endures forever. It requires remembering all the miracles He has already done and not tossing them to the wind but allowing them to blow through our minds as a cool and refreshing breeze of comfort and hope amidst the heat.

Prayer: Father God, You are the God of miracles and enduring goodness and love. Thank You for Your patience with us when we are impatient with You. Bless us this day with cool heads to continue to trust in You and Your plans for our lives amidst the heat of any and all situations. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
