The Everyday Christmas Gift

December 26, 2016
by Lynne Phipps

Matthew 2:10-11 – When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. (NIV)

If there's one thing that I've learned when I am in the corral cleaning up, whether it be summer or winter, it's to be deliberately conscious of my step, for the corral is fraught with perils. Brush, broken branches, rock, and uneven ground abound. Horses and goats break down pretty much anything in their path, and so the landscape of the corral is ever changing. If I don't deliberately choose to watch my step, falls and injuries can happen quickly and easily.

As I was contemplating this thought the other day when I was out there cleaning up, the Lord nudged me a bit farther in regard to being deliberately conscious of my step as His servant, each and every day. That's when the idea of the everyday Christmas gift floated to the surface of my mind. I thought, What if, every day in the new year, I deliberately chose consciously to do something nice, to give an everyday Christmas gift to someone? What if I actually put it on my to-do list each morning and then followed through? How might such a deliberate and conscious choice make a difference for Christ in the lives of others?

Our world is fraught with perils. People around us are always struggling or suffering in one way or another, and none of us always knows what they are going through — but God does.

Therefore, I have decided that in 2017, with God as my helper, I will give an everyday Christmas gift to someone, somewhere. Perhaps the gift will take the shape of a letter of encouragement or a "Thinking of You" card. Perhaps it will be a small handmade gift, or a baked item, or money. Perhaps it will be a conscious prayer, or it could be a phone call to see how someone is doing, or an invitation for tea — I really don't know. But God does. Because He does, I know that, as I pray and listen each day, the everyday Christmas gift that He has for me to pass on to another will make a difference in someone's life, somewhere, for Him. For much like the wise men's gifts, they, too, will be treasures for the King. What better gift could you or I offer to the King of kings and Lord of lords this Christmas season!

Prayer: Father God, thank You that each day, as Your children, we have the best Christmas gift ever. We have the gift of Christ and all His love, wisdom, strength, and glory in our lives. Help us, therefore, to deliberately and consciously choose to share Him with others every day in the coming year, as You lead and direct us. In the wonderful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

You give each reader a gift every time you share a devotional with us.
    Thank you.

What a wonderful idea! Thanks for your devotion today and may you be richly blessed as you follow through with it in 2017.

Wonderful thoughts Lynne; it reminded me that every good and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17). Blessings.

Thank you, Lynne, for sharing this devotional. I saw a TV movie last night with a similar message. God does have a way of reinforcing the lessons He wants us to learn. Thanks again. Blessings.

Lynn, thank you for the thought provoking devotional. It is a true gift of consciousness. God bless you as I will do my best to follow your example.
    Merci beaucoup.

What a lovely plan. I try to do a lot of that sort of quiet gifting, but have never put in place such a deliberate project. I think I will try it as well. Thanks for the idea. Merry Christmas Lynne. I do enjoy your devotionals and will look forward to more over the coming year.

Great devotional this morning, Lynne. My husband and I have decided that we will also make Christmas giving an everyday occurrence. Thank you so much for the idea. I pray your 2017 is the best year yet as you brighten up someone else’s life and thereby your own. God bless.

    Good Morning, Lynne!
What a marvellous idea for a New Year’s resolution! Thank you for sharing this idea of doing something nice each day for someone. I always enjoy reading your devotion, and thank you for sharing His word in such interesting ways! May 2017 bring you many blessings.

Oh Lynne, I don’t know how many people you interact with on a daily basis, but I know that ‘you are’ a gift from God to the people with whom you come in contact. And now, I’m going to make a list of possible ‘every day gifts’ along with a calendar (we get so many at Christmas time – so now I have a use for one of the extras). I’m going to try to follow your example and be more deliberate as I walk through each day – deliberate and intentional in my thinking of other people. I love your idea! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, including all your critters!

    Good afternoon, Lynne.
As I read your contributions to the PC Daily Devotions, I am always impressed by the wonderful messages you convey to readers. I am especially impressed by your choice of “giving a gift” each day. And especially the variety of choices. I would like to borrow your idea and spread some gifts among my friends, family, and those that I can help who are in need. May 2017 be a healthy, loving year for you and yours.
Blessings, and I look forward to future writings from you.

    My dear Lynne,
Greetings! wishing you and your family and your extended families all the very best for the festive season.
I just want to thank you for your gift every time that you write these warm-hearted devotions, I am always in awe, (there’s always a smile on my face) as I read how you share your animals and the nature on your property, and that, my dear Lynne, is the best daily Christmas gift I will look forward to receiving from you moving forward. “Thank you”.
All the very best for the new year 2017.
    Gods richest blessings.

    What a wonderful idea!
It reminds me of a New Year’s resolution a friend made many years ago. We met as 3 year olds, but since we no longer lived in the same part of the province, and email was yet to make keeping in touch easy, she resolved to keep in touch with me once a month — letter, visit, or phone call. Of course, knowing her for most of our lives, I knew that she would need help, and so I wrote or phoned her once a month!! At the end of the year, I congratulated her on opening her letters and answering her phone!!
So, I will not “resolve” to do this, but I will challenge myself to do it, because I rarely fail when challenged with a noble cause. The idea of it being an every day Christmas present is lovely.
Thank you for the inspiration (yes, you can consider this one Christmas gift you have given!)

    Lynne,
Thanks for another insightful and inspirational devotion. The TV corrals (my view of corrals) appear to be spacious contained areas – appearing to be controlled environments, so to speak, from the viewers distant perspective. Yet you know, being the guardian, that the ground holds many unseen hazards and challenges. Your perspective holds valuable insights. The same holds true for our relationship with Jesus. He has the best perspective of our lives and such a great desire for our well-being. Those who don’t know Him have only a surface, worldly view, of Him and can’t comprehend the magnitude of His care/love for us. The more we come to know Him the better our understanding of how all encompassing His care/love for us is. Our perspective changes the more we know Jesus.
You said it best. Great food for thought today.
May God richly bless you in 2017 as you intentionally daily go about doing good for His glory. Thanks for reminding us that Jesus is a 365 day Christmas gift to the world and we are called to share Him with the world.
Have a wonderful week. Thanks again for sharing all of your wisdom with us through your delightful stories!

Hi Lynne. Such a great idea. I am going to try this also. Happy New Year.
And may God bless you each day.

Thanks Lynne. That was a wonderful Devotional and if we all did the same as you planned the world would be a better place. I pray that you will be blessed with good health, happiness and be surrounded by the peace of God in 2017.
The Lord has given you the talent to be able to compose meaningful Devotionals and I always like how you tell an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. What a gift the Lord has given you.
    Blessings.
