Light In The Night

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Jesus Is All The World To Me"1 (Lyrics)

Matthew 5:14-16 – Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (KJV)

In our rural area, street lights can be found in some small communities, but not all. Individual families do have security lights planted somewhere in their farm or yard, but otherwise, when the sun dips behind the horizon, the surrounding area plunges into darkness. To help remedy this lack of light, people attach electric candles to their windows, letting them shine throughout the year. During the day, in full sunlight, the window candlelight appears dim, but at night, these little lights shine brightly, providing a welcoming glow for visitors and helping to illuminate the darkness.

In today's Bible passage, Jesus spoke about a candle giving light to a whole room as a metaphor for the good deeds that we do to help others. Many around here take His words to heart and engage in a variety of good works, like contributing to and manning foodbanks. Likewise, after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and the Gulf Coast, people from our area raced to the flood-stricken areas to aid the victims, while others donated money or goods. In this way, according to Jesus, they became light in the middle of a dark crisis.

When Christ lives in each of us, we gradually become more like Him. That means that we want to do the little things — and the big things — that shine the light of hope into a dismal, dim, and sometimes dark world.

When we do good things to help others, we, too, become shining lights for Christ.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the bright light shining hope into this dark world. Enable us to become more like You, so that through our good deeds, the light of Your presence will shine into the darkness. For Your name's sake, we pray. Amen.

    Amen Cass.

Thank you, Sandy, for another wonderful devotion.

Amen Cass, let us continue in doing good all we can, big and small.

Great message Cass and an important reminder to keep our lamps burning brightly.
    Blessings.

    Thanks for this.
I can just imagine how beautiful the lights in the windows look. What a great image!

    Cassandra,
I’m an East coast transplant to the West Coast and continue the electric candles in my window!

    Dear Cass,
O love reading your devotionals. Thank you for your take on the important concept of being lights for Him.
As I get closer to our Lord, through prayer and reading His word, I receive increased power and direction for living in a very dark world.

    Dear Cassy,
I have just been singing: “I am a city on a hill.”
“I am a city on a hill, I am a light in the darkness. Jesus living in me can change the world.”
A children’s song that touched my heart.
    Blessings.

    Dear Cassandra!
I am inspired by your devotional Light in the Night!
From trials to blessings. From sunshine to rain!
Our help comes from the Light above.
Your light shining in the night proves it!
    Blessings in the Light!

Your “light” truly shines on many people. Thank you for giving us this light of hope and Peace. And many thanks to all who rushed to help those in Harvey’s path.

    Hi Cassandra,
I liked your devotional yesterday. I spoke about the parable of the light under the basket at the Long Term Care Centre recently.
And we concluded that we can’t all be preachers of the gospel but I told the residents that just by showing the other residents that they are going to the Spiritual Talk, which I lead, or to worship they are showing the other residents that they are believers in Christ and are thus letting their light shine.
    Thank you for writing

Thanks for reminding me of :
    This little light of mine,
I’m going to let it shine*
Shine all over… I pray all over the world.
May we, by the Word of the Lord, and by deeds directed by his Spirit, cause the LIGHT of our Lord’s presence to spread through the world.
Save us, Lord, from acts contrary to your will.
Thanks for writing, and keep writing for his glory.
