I Guess They Didn't Hear

Hebrews 5:11 – Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. (KJV)

Many months ago, a commercial for a national coffee company featured a smiling senior sauntering up a hill in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, to fetch her morning brew. The walk was part of her social hour as she waved to people she knew along the way — poking a head in here, calling a "hello" to someone over there.

My family and friends refer to me as "The Lady from Lunenburg" as I say my "Good Morning"s to people and animals along my regular routes. They aren't always people I know, and sometimes someone might not respond — not even a smile in return. They may be very private people, not taken to talking to strangers. Perhaps they have a lot on their mind. Maybe they're ignoring me. Sometimes I think to myself, "I guess they didn't hear."

I wonder what God thinks of us in our spiritual walk. When He's gently guiding us one way and we choose another, when prayers are not answered the way we'd like, when He's assured us He's with us yet we feel alone, does He feel like He's talking to strangers or that we've got too much on our minds to give Him any of our time? Or is it that we're ignoring Him? Does He soften it by saying to Himself, "I guess they didn't hear"?

Prayer: Forgive us, Father, for those times when we are guilty of ignoring You, of treating You like a stranger. Help us remember that no matter how heavy our load may be, it is lessened when we share it with You. Help us not to leave You saying, "I guess they didn't hear." In Your name we pray. Amen.
