Satellites In The Sky

Matthew 6:3-4 – But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (NIV)

How many satellites are there in orbit around the earth today? What are the names of those satellites?

These are some pretty tough questions. I work with satellites, but I could not begin to guess how many satellites there are in orbit. I am betting most people could not tell how many there are. One reason for this is that we cannot see them to count them. Once in a while, on a clear night, one might catch a glimpse of one, but all in all they cannot be seen. Also, not many people know the names of satellites. Some who have satellite TV probably know the name of the satellite they are looking at, but most people would not know the names of many satellites, if any.

Yet we see the results of the work that these satellites are doing. One example is that when we watch the weather on television, the pictures used come from satellites. While we do not see satellites or know their names, we see the work they are doing.

I have seen people who do work in the church, but have to have their names recognized and be honoured for this work. I would rather do the work and not have my name known. If I can help someone in need with supplies, I do not want them to know that it was I who gave the gift. I hope that they may thank God for the gift, because it is his work that I am doing. So while a person may not see me doing something or know my name, they can still see the result of the work God has done through me.

Prayer: God and Lord, all good works come from you and we are just the instruments for those works. May our light shine forth so that these works may glorify you. May we not seek the glory that belongs to you alone. In Jesus' name. Amen.
