Know When To Pass The Puck

Luke 22:42 – Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done. (NIV)

The hockey season in North America is reaching its conclusion this week with the start of the final playoff series for the Stanley Cup. Last night, New Jersey defeated Dallas 7 to 3. Watching a hockey game, I thought about how the player carrying the puck must feel when the opposing team is closing in on him. What is the best thing to do? Is it best to shoot for the goal, or is it best to pass the puck? If he tries to shoot, he could miss and be slammed into the boards. This no doubt could hurt!

In one instant the player has to make that decision.

Passing the puck means giving up the glory of achieving a goal, very often set for ourselves. There have been times I have noticed people who can't let go. For instance, people who retire: some do it with such ease, while others never can let go. This is only one example. There are many times in our lives when we should give up our goals and know when to pass the puck.

A game of hockey is a lot like life. Sometimes it is very hard to let go of our goals. This is probably because the goal is ours and not God's. If we would only let go and let God be the goal of our life.

It is to Him that we must give all the honour and glory. We spend too much time trying to win what He has already gained and given to us — His Son Jesus Christ. We need to know when to pass the puck and not get hurt.

Luke 14:33 – In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. (NIV)

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your Son, who died upon the cross for all our sins. You have already won for us the goal of eternal life. Help us to know when to give up our own goals; to know when to pass the puck. Amen.
