Psalm 119:103 – How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (NKJV)
One day, we had a discussion about things that we like to eat and things that we don't like. I can eat most foods, but I do admit that there are some that I have learned to eat over the years, and there are still some that I'm not crazy about.
We all know how to eat. We pick up our food, we chew it, and swallow it. It goes into our stomach and it is digested. The nutrients that come in our food get dispatched into our blood stream. They give us strength; they give us life. We need our daily nourishment to stay alive. But we also need our spiritual nourishment, and the Bible tells us to taste God's goodness.
Psalm 34 was written by David when he found himself in a desperate situation. Even though he had to pretend to be mentally unstable to get away from those who were threatening him, he still thought of the Lord God, and through this psalm, he encourages us, too, to taste God's goodness:
Psalm 34:8 – Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! (NKJV)
There are several other passages which encourage us to taste God's words.
Ezekiel 3:3 – Then he said to me, "Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it." So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth. (NIV)
Jeremiah 15:16a – Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart. (NKJV)
Isn't that the truth! When we read and study God's Word it does give us great joy indeed.
- Words of comfort and encouragement that God is with us in times of trouble;
- Wonderful historical stories, and prophecies in the Old Testament with their fulfillment in the New Testament;
- In the gospels, the calling of the disciples;
- How the people followed Jesus and how He talked to them in parables;
- Stories they could relate to: the sowing of seeds, the Good Samaritan, the light on a lamp stand;
- The spreading of the gospel where thousands were added to their numbers.
Just as we need our daily food to be able to stay alive and do the things that we want or need to do, so we need daily spiritual nourishment, to take it in, digest it, and strengthen our faith life.
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, we pray that the words of Scripture will continue to give us spiritual nourishment from day to day. We also ask that more and more people will have the desire to read and taste Your Word, and that they, too, will believe. We ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.
