Reflective Tape

Matthew 5:14 – You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden (NIV)

A few years back I did some work in Thule Air Base in Greenland. It was an interesting trip. One thing that was hard to deal with was the dark season there. For the whole of the winter there was no sunlight. When one checked into the base, one was given a kit bag, which contained cold weather gear. It was also mandatory that a parka have reflective tape on it. In case one became lost, this would ensure one was easier to spot. I was impressed at how well that tape showed up in the darkness when light hit it. One could spot someone pretty easily if he were wearing it.

As Christians, we should be like the reflective tape. When we are in the light it should be easy to see us. I have always loved today's verse in Matthew. A city on a hill is seen for miles. In the same way we should be easily seen. There should be no doubt as to whether we are Christians. We should stand out in the world. If we live for Christ, then others should see this in our lives. Others should be able to see Christ in us. We should not be hiding Christ, but instead showing others what Christ is like.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may your Holy Spirit guide us in our lives so that we may be lights in this world for you. May you give us the strength never to hide our light, but to let it shine strongly before others. In Jesus' name. Amen.
