Preparing For God's Future #1

Psalm 148:13 – Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. (NRSV)

We have come to the close of our millennium celebration for the Presbyterian Church in Canada. This marks the end of one of my personal efforts to mark this millennium moment and the focus on Jubilee and the celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

Throughout the long celebration, I have been reminded by the Celebrate! Convener, Walter McLean, that the choice is always before us to take the significant moments and either ignore them or celebrate them to the best of our ability. Our Celebrate! Committee here (at St. Andrew's Church, Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada) has helped us take the special moments and lift them up to the glory of God. We have worshipped and prayed and planted and participated in joint ventures and banner making and a host of other activities, and all was done to the glory of God and in anticipation of the future God has for us.

But the choice was always ours: to ignore the celebration, or to give it our best. In spite of financial setbacks, a lightning strike, and a host of other circumstances, we have chosen to celebrate, because we know the plans God has for us — plans to prosper and not to punish. Thanks be to God.

Here's how we prepare for God's future:

Psalm 148:13 – Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. (NRSV)

Prayer: Help us, gracious God, to prepare for the future you have for us by celebrating the special moments on our journey of faith, especially as we celebrate Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. Amen.
