First Things First

Matthew 6:33 – But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (KJV)

When I was young and having trouble making decisions, my mother used to say, "Get your priorities straight." She was right. Having overall priorities to guide our life makes day-to-day decisions easier. For example, if our priority is to keep our job, we will be more likely to complete our tasks and refrain from criticizing our colleagues. If our priority is to have a happy family life, we will make time for our children and refrain from relationships that could put our marriage in danger.

In our Scripture reading for today, Jesus set out the first priority for Christians: to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness. We are to reflect the Lord's kingdom of love and justice in our own lives and to extend it to others as we are able. We should try to make all of our other decisions in light of that priority.

This is hard to do, but God promises that obeying this priority will bring great reward. He promises that all things necessary for life will be added to those who follow that path.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the guidance that You provide in Your Word. Grant us the grace to seek Your kingdom and to make that the first priority in our lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

    Thanks, Richard.

    Good advice Richard.

Amen Richard, a good word today.
    Blessings.

Thank you for your devotional. This should be our motto for Assembly!
    Blessings.

Richard, Yes! May we always keep our priorities straight. God first, family second, and job third. The last two depend on the first and are also interdependent. Thanks for the reminder. Blessings.

    Dear Richard;
Your devotional this morning couldn’t have come at a better time as I have some life changing decisions to make.

    Amen and amen dear brother!!
Thank you for this important reminder (“seek ye first the kingdom of God”), as we speed along throughout our day today.

Re Thought for Today: Why indeed?
    It’s true. Aren’t we perverse?
Get your priorities straight – and it all falls into place.
    Great message! Thanks!

Richard: Thank you for the Devotional topic for today. It was right to the point upon which I cannot add a single word.
Also I enjoyed the Thought for Today you chose, it being very direct and so truthful.
May God through His Son continue to bless you real good.

    Hi Richard,
This is the very first text that impacted me as a teenager when I was asked to read a portion from Matthew 6. It has stayed with me ever since and still remains one of my favourites.
Thank you for the reminder from your mother. As the twig is bent so grows the tree.
