School Days

Mark 4:12 – They may look and look, yet not see; they may listen and listen, yet not understand. For if they did, they would turn to God, and he would forgive them. (GNB)

My daughter started senior kindergarten last fall. I am a stay-at-home mom and we had decided that a year at home was more important to a four-year-old than a year at school, so we had not sent Bethany to junior kindergarten the previous year.

When September came, almost all the other children were preparing for their second school year. It was a difficult adjustment for Bethany. Both she and the teacher had several frustrating days as she adjusted. Eventually, she began to realize what was expected of her, and she now enjoys school.

In January, her teacher left to work on a literacy program. The kindergarten class now has a new teacher. This teacher did not have to go through the adjustment period with Bethany. She sees only the eager student Bethany has become.

God sees us only as we are. We always have a clean slate. He doesn't question, doesn't hold a grudge, doesn't remember past mistakes. Every moment is like a first impression. He loves us for who we are, not who we were.

Prayer: Loving God, Your forgiveness never ends. We come to You with heavy hearts, and You always lift us up. Forgive our weakness. Amen.
