Carriers Of His Love

1 Corinthians 13:13 – And now abideth faith, hope, and charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (KJV)

1 Corinthians 13:13 – And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. (NIV)

1 John 4:12-13 – No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. (KJV)

My whole Easter season was spent far away from home, and although it was for pleasure as well as work, it took me away from most of my family and friends.

In one of my stops, I had taken time to choose special cards for those who mattered most to me — especially for those who were facing extraordinary challenges.

As I pulled the "airmail" postage across my tongue and placed it on each envelope, I thought of the time it would take to travel to their destinations and knew, barring some glitch, they would be delivered in plenty of time for Easter.

Once home, more than a month later, I received an e-mail from a relative thanking me for the card which she had just received in a sealed plastic bag, complete with a note from the postal corporation. It seems that the card had been recovered from among mail that had been found dumped in a garbage can, and that they were looking into the matter.

Somehow, somewhere, in some way, those to whom our mail had been entrusted — those called to be "carriers" of our words, our mail — had tossed it aside.

In a meditation, Mother Teresa — well known for her love and work for charity — says in part, "First let us love our neighbours and so fulfill God's desire that we become carriers of His love and compassion."

I like that: "carriers of His love and compassion". Will we fulfill God's desire and carry His love and compassion, as it has been entrusted to us to do, or will we toss it aside, dump it, like those letters?

Prayer: Grant us the wisdom to see your love as a gift we can share, and your compassion a gift we can give. Help us spread them where, when and to whom they are needed, as you have entrusted us to do. In your name we pray. Amen.
