1 Peter 5:10-11 – And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. (NIV)

Not too long ago I wrote about how we had neglected the clocks in our house [Clock Chime — Tune Out, Tune In, May 8, 2001]. We finally got them fixed. The grandfather clock required a house call and had to be taken away for repair. It was away for over three weeks, but it was worth all the time spent by the clockmaker to clean and repair it. Now it sits like the day we brought it into our home, ticking away and chiming the time.

When we neglect ourselves and perhaps get a little run down physically, it can put a strain on our spiritual lives. In order to see the good in our lives we need to keep a good attitude about ourselves. Comparing ourselves to our clock, we need to call in an expert in the area we're feeling troubled. In the case of the clock it was a good clockmaker who loved clocks and knew his business. In the case of ourselves with physical ailments, a good doctor is in order, and in reference to our spiritual needs, we sometimes need an expert in spiritual living. We know it is God whom we need, but very often a caring friend can direct and encourage us. Like the clockmaker who knew his clocks, we need the help of someone with a pastor's heart to help guide us back to the fullness of Christ.

Let us not neglect the good in our lives, for it is in Christ we live and move and have our being. It is in Him that we do our best work and through Him we are blessed and renewed again.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we come to You, asking to be strengthened and renewed in Your spirit, that we will once more make the best of the life entrusted by You to us. We pray we will be restored to the true richness of life in Jesus Christ. Amen.
