The Sacrifice

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (NKJV)

John 15:12-13 – This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. (NKJV)

My ten-year-old daughter looks forward to the end of each month with great anticipation. She gets her allowance. By the time her allowance arrives, most of her money from the previous month has been spent.

Recently, several days after she was paid, it was my son's thirteenth birthday. My daughter bought him a Slurpee for a present, worth $1.25 — sort of a token birthday present. My son got quite a bit of money for his birthday, but not enough to complete the skateboard package that he wanted. He didn't have enough for wheels. We were at the store "looking" at wheels, when all of a sudden my daughter whispered to me, that she would like to buy the wheels for his real birthday present. I was impressed by her generosity. The wheels were half price, so she could afford all four, if she borrowed a little from me. So that is what happened. My son was excited by this gesture of kindness and profusely thanked his sister. I noticed that this seemed to make a positive difference is his attitude towards her. This was a miracle. As a rule, they do not get along and are always fighting with one another.

After thinking about this miracle, I realized that there was a relationship between my daughter's sacrifice and the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross, for us. My daughter had all the money that she wanted right then. She desperately wanted to keep it, but she also wanted to make her brother happy. She sacrificed her allowance for my son's happiness. Sound familiar? Jesus had everything, but was asked to sacrifice his life so that those who asked would be saved from their sins. He sacrificed everything for us. This is what real love is all about.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we thank you for being here for us, at any time of the day. Please forgive the sins that we have committed today, and release us from them. Thank you for dying on the cross for those sins and for the sacrifice that you made for us. Thank you for your amazing love, so immense and free. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
