Listen while you read: "Glory Be To God The Father"1 (Lyrics) |
Exodus 16:4-5 – Then the Lord said to Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days." (NIV)
The other night as I lay in bed contemplating the day's finished work and what needed to be done on the morrow, once again, I felt somewhat overwhelmed: so much to do, so little time to do it in. It was then that the story of God feeding His people with manna came to my mind. Every day, God rained down bread from heaven, that His people would be well nourished during their trek through the desert. Each day, except the Sabbath, they were to go out and collect the manna. The manna, other than when God so ordained it, did not keep for the next day. Picking it up was a daily task.
Then it came to me: God is still providing daily manna for me each and every day, if only I will take the time to collect it. Through the disciplines of prayer, meditation, and fellowshipping with Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit within, my spiritual basket collects the manna of His guidance, strength, wisdom, and anything else that I might need for my day.
Wow, spiritual manna from heaven — what an amazing thought! — available daily to each and every one of us, if only we will make and take the time to collect and feed upon it.
What are you collecting in your spiritual basket today: worldly junk food or manna from heaven?
Prayer: Father God, thank You for spiritual manna, available to us daily. May we choose to collect it through the disciplines of prayer, meditation, and fellowship with Christ through Your Holy Spirit, that we might be nourished and strengthened for the tasks of the day. In Christ's name, we ask. Amen.

Wow, amazing devotional, thank you. So true.
Thanks Lynne for sharing this devotional “manna” with us. Blessings.
Good advice, Lynne. Life can sure be overwhelming at times. Blessings.
Thanks for your devotionals always. I know I, too, am prone to gather worldly junk food. I appreciate the warning.
Dear Lynne,
Thank you for being in touch with the mamma-giver so you can share with us some of the daily bread we need.
Keep writing.
Hi Lynn
Thank you, this was a very good devotion and yes what a gift we have to have spiritual manna!!! Will be thinking of my basket and what I am putting in it daily. Thanks again and God bless.
Thanks Lynne. Another very good devotional. How very thankful we should be to our Lord for His eternal gift to us. His “manna” never ceases through the Holy Spirit’s work, always available to “fill our baskets” if we open our hearts to receive.
Blessings,
(B.C.)
Thank You very much for sharing your thoughts – I know them well. Many times I feel overwhelmed with what needs to be done, and what I can do. God has helped in many ways, but there is still much to do – too much. But, as the hymn says, “work while the light is dawning, work till the day is done ….”
God WILL help, or I surely would fail. Thank You God. Amen.
Dear Lynne:
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful devotional. It is amazing how God nourishes us through His word every day!
Unfortunately, this brings to mind how warped and fallen this world has become because people are not following the words God has blessed us with in His roadmap for life. Some even get stuck on certain phrases like “an eye for eye” and take a lot out of context.
We need to pray for wisdom and right thinking and that we may live as we are taught to live in love and peace.
God bless you always.
Lynne – loved this devotional. I need to remind myself as I am making long lists of “things to do”, that the most important thing I MUST do is seek the Father’s Manna. God Bless you Lynne.
This is very appropriate today! When under pressure he showers me with so many helpful insights.
Great to be reminded!
