Reaching For Home

Hebrews 12:12 – Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet. (TEV)

It's been a tiring and gruelling day. I've been on my feet and on the road since before the first light of day, and it is now late at night. I just want to catch that last bus and go home.

"Where are you reaching for?" asks the conductor.

"Vreed en Hoop," I say wearily.

"Come, come," she says. If you're Dutch, you don't need to be told, but I'm heading for Vreed en Hoop — Free in Hope — and the strange thing is that I am on my way back from Vryheid's Lust — Freedom's Desire.

I am so glad to be on the bus. I know that home will soon be close and my journey will soon be over. The rest of the ride is in the hands of the driver and the conductor. There's a little room left on the bus tonight. That's unusual, so the conductor waits, and calls out the destination for a few more minutes. When someone responds, she says, "Come, come." So the bus is finally full and it's time to be reaching for home.

I love the expressions here in Guyana. They are colourful and ever so expressive. Instead of asking my destination, I am asked where I'm reaching for, and at that moment, late at night, it was exactly what I was doing — reaching for home.

The Bible sees us as worn and weary on the journey of faith, reaching for home, reaching out to the destination before us, seeking the city "whose builder and maker is God" (Hebrews 11:10).

Are we ready?

Prayer: Guardian God, guide us through the journeys of the day and help us reach for that ultimate destination where we arrive home and find ourselves in your presence and in your peace. Amen.
