Harbour To Harbour

Joshua 1:3,7 – Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. (KJV)

Living on an island on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada, leaves us with basically three commercial modes of transportation to and from the mainland. We may travel by foot or by car using one of two ferries. One ferry docks at Horseshoe Bay and takes just over an hour and a half, with a further half- to three-quarter-hour drive to Vancouver. The other ferry docks at Tsawwassen, and takes about two hours, with a further hour's drive to Vancouver, or one's choice of routes further inland.

A little faster is the commercial airline, which takes about twenty minutes, lands at Vancouver International Airport, with a further half- to three-quarter-hour drive to Vancouver.

Fastest of all is the private air service, which takes passengers from Nanaimo harbour to the harbour in downtown Vancouver — so you're right there. No long waits or line-ups, no further travelling, no noisy kids or cramped quarters. And best of all, it takes only about twenty minutes.

Great. If that is how you choose to travel.

Sometimes our spiritual journeys are made in much the same manner. Like the ferry, we may take our time, giving thanks to God throughout the day for the many blessings He bestows upon us. Sometimes we may choose a little faster route, saving up our thanks until the end of the day, or for once a week on Sundays. Fastest of all, would be to choose to rush from our "worldly harbour" to our "heavenly harbour", without ever bothering to give Him thanks at all.

Which route will we take?

Prayer: God of grace and mercy, grant us the wisdom to acknowledge the blessings You so freely bestow upon us throughout each and every day. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
