How Safe Is Your Deck?

Monday, March 24, 2003

Genesis 6:16 – You shall make a window for the ark, and shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. (NKJV)

Psalm 28:7 – The Lord is my strength and my shield. (KJV)

Psalm 46:1 – God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (KJV)

Job 9:4 – He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. (KJV)

Two of the previous premiers of the Province of British Columbia have been injured by the decks on their homes. One, politically, by a lapse in judgement concerning whom he chose to build the deck. He neglected to exercise his code of ethics as protection. The other, physically, when he fell to rocks and water below, while cleaning his deck. There was no guard rail for protection.

The one premier was eventually exonerated, but not before he was forced to leave office in disgrace. The continual negative publicity and ensuing court case must surely have been very hard on him and his family.

By the grace of God, the premier who fell was discovered and sustained by his wife until professional help arrived. It is not certain as yet whether or not he will be left with a permanent disability.

Our spiritual lives can be seen as parallels to these situations. If we consider our physical selves and "who we are" to be our "house", and then consider all else to whom and to which we are connected, as extensions of us — or our "decks" — let us ask: How safe is our "deck"?

Do we choose our friends and how we interact with them wisely, or do we allow a lapse in judgement to cloud our character, causing disruption in our lives? Do we have God as our "guard rail", to hold us up, to lean against, to rely on for protection in times when we may otherwise stumble and fall?

Let us be led by the Scriptures, which repeatedly reinforce that God is our strength, our light, our refuge and our salvation.

Prayer: May we look to You, Lord, as one to lead us in making wise choices, and one to turn to when we fail, or fall. In Your name we pray. Amen.
