The Highway To Everlasting Life

John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (NKJV)

It was in 1994, during a visit from one of our daughters and her infant daughter, that a crisis occurred in our family. This dear child of God was only one month old. She stopped breathing following a cranky time she was having. Her mother had just given her some gripe water, an old-time remedy, when suddenly she went completely limp and stopped breathing.

Everyone around me was in a state of panic. My granddaughter was handed to me in this limp, rag doll condition. By this time, the ambulance had been summoned, but it was taking what seemed to us to be a very long time to cross the four short kilometres from the ambulance station to our home. Then I remembered that I had taken infant CPR during my working years, and I thank God that the training experience kicked in when it was needed. Surely He heard our cries, because I do not believe that it was any coincidence that, after seven long years, I suddenly remembered my training.

When the ambulance did arrive, our granddaughter was breathing, but barely. The excuse from the driver was that we did not tell them which side of the highway we were located on. I followed the ambulance all the way to the hospital, praying harder than I had ever prayed in my life. When we arrived at the emergency ward, it was music to my ears to hear her loudly crying. My prayers were answered: the baby was alive and breathing on her own.

Isaiah 40:3 – The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for God." (NKJV)

This story set me to thinking about our pathway to God. Do we know which side of the highway we are on? Are we travelling the straight and narrow highway route that He has set out for us? He does not time us, as we did while waiting for the ambulance. When we are going through the desert times in our lives, we need to cling to Him in order to climb our mountains. What beautiful music we will hear one day, if we take the right highway to God through His Son Jesus Christ. Sometimes we get off-track, and we do not want that to happen, as perhaps we will be too late getting there. The highway to God is not an 8-lane freeway, but one straight and narrow highway through His Son to His throne on high.

Isaiah 49:11 – I will make each of My mountains a road, and My highways shall be elevated. (NKJV)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us always to follow the route You have planned for us, even though, at times, we may find many detours along the way. Give us the strength and the grace to stay focused on the path set before us to follow You along the highway to life everlasting. Amen.
