The Light In You

John 12:35 – Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. (NIV)

As I checked out of the grocery store, I glanced at the magazines on the rack. In the one that caught my attention, Christmas trees were being called "holiday trees". The magazine displayed a wreath and candles, but the article was called "Designs for the Happy Holidays".

Happy Holidays? I wondered about Christmas, a day of the year when we Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, the light of the world. Here we walk in the light, side by side with others who have failed to see the light and walk in darkness, stumbling along the way, having spiritually missed the divine guidance brought to us at Christmas time.

2 Corinthians 4:4 – The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (NIV)

Who is the god of this age? Yes, it is Satan, who works to form a veil of any kind to prevent people from seeing the gospel light that we hold high.

Matthew 5:14,16 – You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV)

No doubt this year we will find more things labelled "Happy Holidays", but it is left to us who believe to reach out once more to those around us, holding high our traditional beliefs written in God's Word.

It is the light in you and in me that others will see, and we pray that, by seeing our example, they might see the light and give up the darkness before it is too late.

Prayer: We praise You, O God, for Your blessings. May You give us the strength to grasp with firmer hand the light that we have within us. Help us to pass that light on to those who cannot see, and who walk in darkness. We pray this especially at this time of year, when Your Son was born to give us the light of all lights. In Jesus' name. Amen.
