Exodus 33:19 – I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, "The Lord"; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
The church has dug deep looking at the why and the wherefore and all the rest regarding God, though I don't think we have ever attempted a biography, such as that of Jack Miles in his book God: A Biography.
Who is God? is right up there with the crucial questions of the old catechism.
God is my Heavenly Father.
Who is God? is the first section of Living Faith (a statement of the beliefs of the Presbyterian Church in Canada), but that doesn't mean it is ever answered. Section 1.6 does describe God as the source of life, and that we acknowledge God's wisdom, power, faithfulness, and love. The only definition ever given in scripture of God is that God is love and so any understanding of God must of necessity begin with this premise.
Prayer: Many days, my Lord, I wake wondering, who are you?, and every day I am given new glimpses of who you are –
- in the faces of friends,
in the needs of neighbours,
in the cries of children,
in the love that sends me off to sleep.
