Thank God For The Birds

Sunday, March 21, 2004

Genesis 1:20-21 – And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (NIV)

There's a parable about a man, who, as the ground around him was flooding, continued to call on God for help. The problem was that he was expecting God Himself to reach out His hand and grasp him to safety. However, in waiting for that to happen, the gentleman missed all the opportunities God provided for him to be rescued by other means.

God "rescues" us in many ways, in even some of the very smallest, seemingly insignificant matters. It is up to us to recognize His hand at work in our lives.

Anyone who has ever spent time with an active toddler knows that there are many moments when we need to be "rescued".

Having been blessed with our granddaughter's care for six weeks in the fall, I saw the hand of God at work many times. She rises at 4:30 a.m., and by 7:00, after eating, playing, dancing, and reading, she's rather bored, so we stand at the window, and wait for the birds. We are not ever disappointed. First one or two fly by, heading out for their day's activities, followed by flocks of more and more.

They continue their trek for about twenty minutes, and I thank God for giving them to us at a time when we need the distraction.

He blesses us with them again about 4:15 in the late afternoon as they wend their way back home for the night.

Many a time I have taken a child to the window, and found His graciousness in the likes of a squirrel scampering across the road to a tree, a cat creeping around a yard, dogs walking with their owners, or leaves wafting to the ground.

His "hand" reaches out to help us in so many wonderful and wondrous ways.

Prayer: Thank You, Father, for coming to our rescue when other avenues have been exhausted. Help us to recognize Your helping hand in the bountiful beauty that surrounds us — in something as simple as looking out our window. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
