Christians Need New Clothes

Wednesday, November 3, 2004

Isaiah 61:10-11 – I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with the garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seed to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. (NIV)

I'll have to admit that I've spent lots of energy, time, and money throughout my life on clothing. I love clothing and accessories. In my earlier years, I was taught that clothes make the man (or woman), that people judge us by the way we dress, and that the way we dress reveals a lot about us. Society has come a long way since the days when those words were spoken for truth, but in many instances, our choice of clothes does reveal a lot about us.

Our heavenly Father is concerned about our clothing too. In today's Scripture, He has told us what a well-dressed child of His should wear. He says to put on the garments of salvation and the robes of righteousness.

Colossians 3:12-14 – Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. (NIV)

If we wear the clothing of God, there's no need to worry about how we look. God's garments and accessories add radiance to us, radiance that outshines all designer garments and decorations of silver and gold, with no need for touch-ups from beauticians and cosmetologists. His beauty shines through and His love ties it all together.

Prayer: Take away our concerns about the way our body is clothed. Teach us how to dress with Your garments and how to let Your accessories shine forth. Amen.
