Living Waters

Revelation 7:17 – The Lamb in the centre of the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to streams of life-giving water, and God will wipe all tears from their eyes. (CEV)

Often we take many of the everyday blessings in our life for granted. Recently, I discovered that I was doing just that. One morning on arising, we discovered that we did not have any water to flush the toilet or to wash with. My first reaction was to say to my husband, "You would think that the District would give us some warning before they shut off our water supply." On further checking, we learned that a contractor, while cleaning the ditches on our street, had accidentally broken the water line in several places and that it might be several hours before water flowed through the pipes to our house.

Throughout the day as we waited for the return of the water, the Lord brought to my mind an article that I had read recently in a national magazine. It told how some women in certain places of the world were forbidden to walk on the street or to drink from the same well as the upper classes. These women, considered to be of a lower status in life, had to go a great distance out of their way to get water for their families. They had to risk not only being killed, but also being raped while making this dangerous trek to get the water to keep their families alive.

This story brought a feeling of shame to me at even thinking about complaining about being without water for such a short time. When we are thirsting, let us not forget that God has promised us living waters, waters that do not have to be piped into the house where lines break down.

Matthew 5:6 – Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. (NKJV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, bless those in all parts of the world who thirst and hunger, not only for water and food, but also for the living waters which only You provide. May we who have an abundance of food and water share with those who don't. Help us, Lord, not to take our many blessings so much for granted. Create in each of us a thankful heart. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
