Ecclesiastes 11:3-4 – When the clouds are full of water, it rains. When the wind blows down a tree, it lies where it falls. Don't sit there watching the wind. Do your own work. Don't stare at the clouds. Get on with your life. (MSG)
In the late summer and fall, hurricanes and tropical disturbances blow into the southern United States. Many times when these hurricanes are approaching, school is dismissed, meetings planned for weeks are called off, and our one thought is of preparing for living without electricity in case it is lost. A lot of productive time is wasted and fear generated, and we literally "watch the wind" and the television to find out what is going to happen.
Now, it is important to listen to the weather report. He would be a foolish man who did not heed the warning of a storm heading his way. We need to prepare for the safety of family and business. Yet sometimes, there are things that have to go on regardless of the weather. Many things have to proceed as normal. Life has to go on.
Acts 8:27 – [Phillip] got up and went. He met an Ethiopian eunuch coming down the road. The eunuch had been on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and was returning to Ethiopia, where he was minister in charge of all the finances of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. (MSG)
The eunuch was reading Isaiah's promise of the suffering Saviour, and was trying to come to grips with his words. He accepted Phillip's interpretation, and was baptized right there. Phillip did not talk about the weather; he took advantage of the opportunity.
Our opportunity to witness for Christ may come on a day the weatherman says a hurricane is coming. Regardless of the conditions surrounding him, the eunuch was ready to accept. All he needed was someone to interpret for him. Regardless of the way the wind is blowing, we have to be ready. Life has to go on even though hurricanes are headed our way. We need to be prepared, as well as the weather service.
Prayer: Lord, help us to realize that life goes on, regardless of the weather. Sowing seeds and taking advantage of opportunities is never out of season. May we stop watching the wind and look forward with faith as the storms of life come our way. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
