You Can Be A Beacon

Matthew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV)

Having upgraded my computer to Windows XP, I purchased a new digital flat-screen monitor. I like it, as it gives me much more space on my desk to place a book or paper from which I wish to copy.

I had one problem with this, though. Affixed to the top of my old monitor, I had a model of a lighthouse that couldn't be attached to the top of the new one, so I put it up on the shelf above. Now as I sit before the monitor, I don't see the lighthouse anymore. This reminded me of a line from the country gospel song, "You can't be a beacon if your light don't shine." In other words, what good is a lighthouse if no one can see the light?

If we are to be a spiritual lighthouse, Jesus is the light of the world Who sends out His light through us.

John 8:12 – When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (NIV)

Once we receive Jesus into our lives, we can become a beacon, and He intends His light to shine out through us by the good deeds that we do in His name.

Matthew 5:14-15 – You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (NIV)

As the song goes on to say, "You can be a beacon if you'll let it shine!"

Prayer: Dear Lord, whether or not we have a model of a lighthouse to remind us of the beacon within our hearts, help us by Your Holy Spirit to let Your Son, Jesus, shine out to others through us, so that others can see our good deeds and give praise to You. Amen.
